Historically Accurate Replicas & Period Frames

We produce faithful, bench-crafted reproductions of carved and gilded period frames originating from America, England, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and Italy. Using authentic historical materials and techniques, each structure is tailored precisely to the artwork's era, regional roots, and aesthetic intent.

The artisanal ethos

Historical accuracy is a rigorous discipline.

A truly successful period housing relies on matching the artwork's specific timeline in every dimension. Our craftsmen analyze historical documentation and museum originals to hand-carve timber, execute incised gesso and sgraffito detailing — scratching through layers to reveal underlying colors — cast composition elements, and implement time-honored finishes such as Dutch ripple mouldings and ebonized pearwood.

Regional heritage

The traditions we replicate.

Traditions of ItalyRenaissance-era cassetta profiles, Florentine sgraffito, intricate hand-burnished punchwork, incised gesso, and Baroque carved designs grounded by rich terracotta clay bole undertones.
Dutch & Spanish MasteryTraditional Spanish polychrome finishes enriched with tempera sgraffito, alongside 17th-century Dutch ripple mouldings and ebonized hardwood structures.
French Louis & Empire ErasDetailed hand-carved foliate corner ornamentation, swept contours from the Louis XIII–XVI periods, and structured Empire architectural mouldings elevated by burnished leaf detailing.
American Modernists & MastersHudson River School gilded variations, Sully-style contours, Stanford White architectural patterns, Prendergast hand-carved profiles, and minimalist, rounded housings in the style of O'Keeffe.
Institutional Replica ProgramsWe craft custom period replicas for private collections, foundations, and museums nationwide — with national shipping, receiving, and climate-controlled storage before and after the work.

On the bench now

A Prendergast frame, in the making.

Period framing is a living craft at our benches. These photographs show a frame currently in preparation for a Maurice Prendergast work — the profile milled and the ornament built up in the tradition of the American frames of Prendergast's own circle, ready for gesso, bole, and leaf.
