This spectacular painting by Houston artist Anthony Haynes came to us recently from our friends over at Whitten and Proctor Fine Art Conservation. We framed the work in a contemporary oak frame milled, joined, and finished in-house with a brown rub and fitted with 3/16" museum-grade anti-glare Optium acrylic.
Bird's eye maple
A rare variant of hard maple, bird's eye is a premium wood prized for its rarity and the unique figuring of the grain. It's unknown what exactly causes the swirling pattern, but the result is a beautifully textured wood with an almost pearly, iridescent surface. The bird's eye figuring in this maple frame echoes the decorative background texture of this J. P. Terlizzi photograph and achieves one of the most important goals of any framing design: to create visual interest and harmony between the art and frame without distracting from the work itself.
Ebonized walnut with a gilded face
We were so excited to make this custom panel frame in ebonized walnut with a gilded inner frame face for Inman Gallery. The frame was handmade and gilded by our Master Gilder with 12k white gold over brown clay. The black satin sheen of the surrounding wood surface was achieved through a meticulous dye and wax process.
The "O'Keeffe frame"
We call this frame profile the "O'Keeffe frame" due to its close association with the late American Modernist painter. Characterized by a tall interior and a convex curved outer slope, this modern profile is clean and elegant in design but dramatic in effect.
Drawing with scissors
In 1943, Matisse began creating compositions with gouache-painted paper cutouts in a technique he called "drawing with scissors" — an exercise that would later evolve into a series of 20 pochoir prints titled Jazz. From editions of 100, these three selected prints depict scenes from the circus and the artist's memories of Tahiti, with its "shimmering colours of the tropics, with animals or undulating forms, [and] evocations of calm waters…"
We kept the frames sleek, modern, and rounded to echo the organic shapes and curved lines in the prints, with a burnished white gold leaf finish for a touch of glamour. The sides of the frames are painted a matte black to ground the bold, graphic elements of the work. Thank you C2 Art Advisors for bringing these beautiful works to us for framing!
